A design practice that built a tool.

It started with a friend who needed a designer. Andrew Janatka could name exactly what he liked, and still couldn't turn it into a room. So he asked Charlie Barstein.

What Charlie did next (look at what Andrew was drawn to and build a room around it, pieces chosen to belong together) is the thing Hano now does for everyone. The studio is two people: the eye, and the way to put it in your hands.

Co-founder

Charlie Barstein

Charlie is an interior designer who has spent a decade making rooms, including years at Commune Design, the Los Angeles firm named to the AD100. His own projects have run in the pages of Architectural Digest, most recently a Los Angeles home for actor Peter Porte and Jacob Jules Villieres.

His work is material-led and quiet: a few character-defining pieces, a lot of restraint, nothing in the room that doesn't earn its place. He believes most people already have the instinct, and simply need a way to put it to use. The eye behind Hano is his.

Charlie's studio, formerly Charlie Barstein Interiors, is now part of Hano (With Hano, LLC).

One of them has the eye. The other built the way to put it in your hands.

Co-founder

Andrew Janatka

Andrew is a product and software builder with a decade of experience, drawn to products that pay attention to the person using them: software that feels personal rather than generic.

Furnishing his own home was the problem he couldn't solve. He knew what he liked and still couldn't make it come together. Charlie helped, and it worked. So Andrew built the system so that same help could reach anyone, the way it had reached him.

Most people already have taste. What they lack is the structure to act on it, and the confidence that comes with it.

A room should feel collected, not decorated, as if it happened over time, even when it didn't. Most of it should stay quiet; a few pieces carry it, and the rest supports.

Nothing earns a place by being expensive, or new, or on trend. It earns a place by being right for the room, and for the person in it.

The same standard, at any budget.

Every piece Hano recommends is held to one bar: real materials, honest construction, made to last. Cheap tricks and planned obsolescence don't make the cut, whether a piece costs two hundred dollars or two thousand.

We'd rather stand behind one piece than fill a grid with ten. And every choice is made for the person in the room, not the payout.

Hano comes from the Greek mathano — to learn.

Taste isn't assigned. It's discovered, by looking carefully at the right things, which is what the studio does with you and what the name keeps us honest about.
